Have you ever failed so badly that you feel like starting over is impossible?

• Disappointed yourself

Your failure may have been public – something that everyone saw, or it may have been private – something known only to you. Maybe no one else but you knows what you are struggling with. Is there a habit, relationship, or pattern that you have promised yourself over and over again that you would never do again, and then you did?

Maybe you were once close to God. You spent time with Him, attended church, and had great joy in that relationship. Maybe you have walked away from God, or you believe He is done with you.

You wish you could go back in time and make different choices, but you know that is impossible. Now you feel like you have messed up too much, too often, and there is no hope for a fresh start.

Living with no hope for a fresh start is a painful way to experience life, but there is good news! There is hope – real hope. The Bible is filled with people who failed, struggled, and felt stuck… yet God gave them a fresh start.

When Failure Feels Final

So often when we think of the people written in the Bible, we think of all the great things they did. Peter wrote books of the Bible, preached on the day that 3,000 people trusted in Jesus, and traveled extensively in his time, telling others about Jesus. But all these accomplishments in Peter’s life came after some big mistakes.

There are many examples of times that Peter spoke and then failed to live up to what he had said. Let’s look at just a few of these moments.

• Jesus knew that He was going to be tried, convicted, and killed, and He knew that He would rise again on the third day. In Matthew 16, Jesus was preparing His disciples for all that was about to happen to Him. Peter reacted to Jesus’ teaching by rebuking the Lord. Peter let his emotions, not wisdom, control his words. Can you imagine Peter scolding Jesus!? Jesus sharply corrected Peter for his rash words and lack of understanding. Peter must have felt stunned, embarrassed, and humbled. Have you ever said something you shouldn’t have… something you regretted?
• Before His death, Jesus warned His disciples that they would all be offended because of Him that night. Peter boldly boasted that everyone else might be offended, but he would never be offended. He may have been sincere in his promise, but he was wrong. Have you ever made a promise you couldn’t keep?
• Peter is infamous for denying Christ three times, but he also refused to let Jesus wash his feet, cared about what would happen to John, and told Jesus he would die for Him. Have you ever focused on the wrong things?

Peter didn’t just speak rashly — he acted rashly too. Here are a couple of examples.

• In John 18, Peter’s reaction was action rather than words. When the guards came to arrest Jesus in the Garden, Peter drew his sword and cut off the servant’s ear. Once again, Jesus corrected Peter, telling him to put away his sword, and then Jesus healed the servant’s ear. Have you ever acted rashly?
• In the wake of Jesus’ arrest, Peter’s fear caused him to hang back from Jesus. Peter chose to warm himself by a fire the night of Jesus’ trial. That decision put him in a place where he would deny Jesus three times. In this one night, Peter
  • Let fear control him
  • Made a decision he would regret
  • Hurt someone he loved – Jesus
  • Disappointed himself

Have you ever made a decision that led to a chain of bad decisions?

After denying that he even knew Jesus, Matthew 26:75 says that Peter went out and wept bitterly. What a devastating night for Peter. All that he had thought or believed about himself and his courage and commitment to Jesus had been proven wrong. Have you ever felt devastated because you have let others or yourself down?

But Peter’s story doesn’t end here because God wasn’t done with him yet.

When Jesus Gives You a Fresh Start

Peter is one of the first disciples to see the empty tomb. He is there when Jesus first shows Himself to the eleven disciples and when He returns to show Thomas that He is alive.

In John 21:3, Peter tells some of the other disciples that he is going fishing, and they join him. Some believe that Peter was giving up and returning to his old life of fishing. Others believe that he was simply waiting for Jesus to tell him what to do next. No matter why Peter was fishing that day, Jesus came to him where he was. He called out to the men on the boat and directed them to cast their nets where they would find a huge catch of fish. Jesus prepared a meal for His disciples by the sea that day. Then Jesus asked Peter three times to confirm his love for Him. Three times Peter had denied Jesus, and now three times he declares his love.

Peter’s drastic acts in the garden, his denial by the fire, and his disappointment in himself were about to make a 180-degree turn. Jesus didn’t give Peter a list of things he had to do before he could start over. He didn’t tell Peter that life was hopeless. No — Jesus found Peter where he was, called out to him, and gave him a fresh start. Peter got a renewed purpose that day from Jesus: “Feed my sheep.”

Jesus wants to do the same for you. You may feel like you have to make some changes before Jesus will listen to you, but that is not true. Just like Jesus came to Peter and called out to him, Jesus is calling out to you. He is inviting you to come — to come to Him for forgiveness, provision, and hope.

You may feel like you have gone too far and a new start is hopeless, but there is hope. Jesus is telling you that He can take your past and use you just as you are. He is asking you, “Do you love Me?” If your answer is, “Yes, Lord, I love you!” then He has a purpose for you.

Peter’s story isn’t just history — it’s a picture of how Jesus treats us today. He doesn’t walk away when we fail. He doesn’t wait for us to fix ourselves. He comes to us, calls out to us, and restores us with grace. Peter’s restoration shows us what Jesus can do with a life that feels broken beyond repair.

When You Think You’ve Ruined Everything

Peter’s quick tongue and rash actions could have led him to believe he had ruined everything Jesus intended for his life. His failures could have made him believe his story was over. But Peter’s failures didn’t end his story — they rewrote it into something far greater than he could have imagined. God took the humbled, repentant Peter and made him an example of second chances.

Before his failures, Peter was strong and self-reliant. But after Jesus restored him, God rewrote his story, making him stronger and bolder through the strength of the Lord. We can’t cover everything Peter did after his restoration, but let’s look at some examples:

• Immediately after Jesus ascended to Heaven in Acts 1, we find Peter encouraging the other followers of Jesus to move forward.
• In Acts 2, Peter boldly preaches to a crowd, and 3,000 people trusted in Jesus that day.
• He healed a lame man in the name of Jesus in Acts 3.
• He was a leader in the early church in Acts 4-12
• He wrote the books of 1 Peter and 2 Peter. These were letters sent to strengthen believers.
• He writes 2 Peter, knowing that his death was near. Still, he writes to encourage other believers to continue for the Lord.

No, far from Peter’s failures disqualifying him, they led him to restoration. And God used him more after his restoration than before. After his restoration, Peter:

• Preached with boldness
• Healed with authority
• Led with wisdom
• Wrote with clarity
• Finished with faithfulness

God wants to do the same for you. Learn from Peter’s example. Confess where you have done wrong and allow Him to restore you. There is no failure God will not forgive. He wants to give you a second chance. He wants to restore you. He wants to write the rest of your story.

When God Shows You It’s Not Too Late

You may feel like:

• You have gone too far
• Your failures define your future
• God wants nothing to do with someone like you
• You have ruined everything
• Giving up is your only option

You are not alone. Many people throughout the Bible, modern history, and today have felt the same, but they have found hope in Jesus.

Peter’s story proves that it is not too late for you to get a fresh start. In fact, God specializes in restoring broken people. He is calling out to you to come and find rest. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” God wants to rewrite your story. All you have to do is ask Him.

He can take your broken pieces and make something beautiful. God can:

• Forgive fully
• Restore joy
• Rebuild relationships
• Give new purpose
• Use your story to help others
• Make your ending better than your beginning

You can have a fresh start! A fresh start doesn’t mean your past disappears — it means Jesus redeems it. It means your failures no longer define you. It means you wake up with peace instead of guilt, purpose instead of confusion, and hope instead of despair. A fresh start is Jesus giving you a new direction, a new identity, and a new strength to walk forward.

How to Find a Fresh Start

Maybe you have read all this about Peter, and you’re saying to yourself, “Yes, but Peter knew Jesus, and I don’t.” You can know Him. He wants you to come to Him. He offers restoration, not condemnation. He offers forgiveness, not shame. And He offers it to anyone who will ask Him. Maybe you see yourself in Peter’s story and relate to him in a very personal way. You know Jesus. You have trusted Him as your Saviour. He still loves you and wants to restore you. He has a purpose for your life, and He wants to use you in ways you can’t imagine.

Remember, Peter walked and talked with Jesus every day. He saw the miracles and heard the preaching. Then he denied Jesus by the fire that night. But Peter wasn’t discarded. He wasn’t sidelined, and he wasn’t replaced. No, Peter was restored and used powerfully.

No matter where you are or what you need, there is hope. Come to Jesus. Bring Him your past and let Him write the rest of your story. He will give you a fresh start and restore what feels broken. Your story is not beyond His reach.
